A group of seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
