Similar to the recent storm swept through the northwest the night before, City overwhelmed United aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing three goal triumph for their manager's side owing to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that firmly established their championship potential as they consolidated their place at the top of the table.

Back-to-Back Defeats for Manchester United

This scoreline represented back-to-back WSL setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since last May, placing them a significant margin off the table toppers with their title hopes in serious doubt.

United’s capability to balance domestic and European soccer with a small roster has been a frequently analyzed topic since they earned a place in the European competition. Looking at the schedule, it always appeared this was the week that would fully examine this ability. Unfortunately for the away side, they appeared tired all game, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having taken a toll.

Tactical Shifts

Marc Skinner had sought to rotate the squad with a several alterations. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all added vigor, although the dropping of the high-performing Malard to the bench raised a few eyebrows.

Goals Galore

They increased their advantage with another pair of goals just before the half-time. When Jade Rose was allowed to maraud through the midfield from defense, the pitch became spacious for the hosts. The key Casparij picked the ball up on the right side before delivering a pinpoint ground pass for Bunny Shaw to force home. Shortly later, they had a third after a rapid change in the ball saw Lauren Hemp allowed the room to fire a shot home from outside the box.

After the Break

The clearest adjustment came from Skinner at the break as Malard was introduced for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was futile to shift the momentum of the contest. Ex- Manchester City player Park came nearest, rattling the post, but the visitors were offensively poor and failed to produce a one shot on target.

The home side, on the other hand, could have increased their advantage when a superb Vivianne Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it did not affect the result to the hosts. Having failed to defeat any team who finished above them the previous campaign, the manager's side now have successes against the Gunners and Manchester United to place them in a favorable position after the opening fixtures.
